People type best Wordle starting words as if there is a single champion. There is not. There is a small pile of five-letter openers that cover common consonants and two or three vowels, plus a New York Times tool — WordleBot — that has named different favorites as its model changed. This page lists those names, says what they are for, and sends you to practice boards. Official daily play stays on NYT Wordle. We are an unofficial companion. We will not invent a new simulation and call it science.
What “best” actually means
An opener is “best” only against a goal:
- Information: hit frequent letters so guess two has a smaller leftover list.
- Playability: a word you will actually type every morning without regretting the vowels.
- Hard-mode legality: later guesses must use greens and yellows, so a pretty first word can trap you.
WordleBot is NYT’s post-game coach. It has publicly discussed openers such as CRANE and later SLATE as strong first guesses in its own scoring. Third-party writeups also repeat SALET, STARE, TRACE, and TROPE. Those are citations, not our lab results. Background on the game itself is on Wikipedia’s Wordle page.
If a site publishes a 200-word “ultimate ranking” with no model year, treat it as entertainment.
The short list people keep citing
Use this as a menu, not a podium.
| Word | Why it shows up |
|---|---|
| SLATE | Later WordleBot-era favorite; S, L, T, A, E are common. |
| CRANE | Earlier WordleBot-era favorite; C, R, N plus two vowels. |
| SALET | Solver-community pick (same letter idea as SLATE with A/E). |
| STARE | Easy to remember; vowels and R. |
| TRACE | Same family as CRANE/STARE; good if you like T and C. |
| ADIEU / AUDIO | Vowel dumps. Fine for curiosity; they spend the guess on vowels and leave common consonants unknown. |
We do not crown one row. Pick a word you can type without looking, then keep it for a month so you learn what your second guesses look like. Switching openers every day is how people confuse “the word was hard” with “I never built a process.”
Practice the opener on Wordle Unlimited, not on the homepage if you still need today’s hints. The daily page is for the Eastern puzzle. Unlimited is the gym.
Hard mode is a different job
In hard mode you must reuse revealed hints. A first word full of rare letters can force an ugly second guess. TROPE shows up in hard-mode conversations because it spends common letters without locking you into a corner as often as a novelty word. That is still not a proof. The full constraint, traps, and practice loop are on Wordle hard mode. If you play hard mode, test two openers for a week each on Unlimited with hard rules in your head (reuse yellows and greens) before you change the daily habit.
The solver is for leftover lists after you have greens and yellows — not for generating a secret “best first word of the day.” Using it as an opener oracle skips the game. How to use filters without spoiling the daily is in how to use a Wordle solver.
How to test an opener
- Finish today’s official grid first if you care about the streak.
- Open Unlimited and play ten boards with the same first word.
- Write down how often guess two felt forced.
- Repeat with one other word from the table.
- Keep the one you would still type on a Monday.
That is the entire experiment. You do not need a million-game Monte Carlo to decide between SLATE and CRANE for your hands.
Soft clues versus the full reveal is a separate topic: Wordle hints vs answer. This URL stays on openers.
What we will not target
This site does not try to rank for wordle, wordle today, or nyt wordle. Those queries belong to NYT or to our daily/hint URLs. Best Wordle starting words is strategy. Keep it here once.
FAQ
Is CRANE still the best Wordle starting word?
It was a WordleBot-era pick. SLATE later took that role in NYT’s own writeups. Both remain reasonable. Neither is a law.
Should I start with ADIEU?
Only if you want vowels first and accept weak consonant information. Most “best starting words” lists prefer a mix.
Can I use the solver to pick today’s opener?
No. The solver answers “what still fits my tiles.” An opener is a policy you reuse.
Does Unlimited use the same answer list as NYT?
Treat Unlimited as practice. The official list and the official Bot live on NYT. Do not import a practice solution into a friend’s daily chat.
This is unofficial fan documentation. Play the real daily on NYT Wordle.
