Wordle hard mode is a setting on the official New York Times game: any letter you have already confirmed must appear in every later guess. Greens stay in their slots. Yellows must be reused somewhere. Grays stay out. That is the whole mechanic. It is not a harder word list.
Official play stays on NYT Wordle. We are an unofficial companion. We will not invent WordleBot science, and we will not claim our practice boards sync your NYT streak.

The rule
NYT’s hard mode (Settings → Hard Mode) rejects a guess that ignores information you already have.
- Green A in slot 2: every later word must have A in slot 2.
- Yellow R: every later word must include R, but not in a slot you already proved wrong if the game is also enforcing position from earlier yellows.
- Gray letters: do not reuse them, unless a double-letter possibility is still alive — hard mode does not create extra lives; it only forbids ignoring known clues.
If the game flashes that a word is invalid, you tried to “probe” with a new set of letters the way people do in easy mode. That probe is illegal now. You have to play a word that could still be the answer given the tiles.
Wikipedia’s Wordle page is background on the game. The setting name and menu placement can move; check NYT if the toggle is not where you last saw it.
What it is for
Hard mode is a constraint on you, not on the dictionary. The answer is the same five letters as easy mode. What changes is guess two through six: you cannot spend a turn on a splitter that throws away a green S to test four new consonants.
People turn it on to:
- Stop themselves from fishing with throwaway words.
- Make the streak feel like it was earned under a house rule.
- Train for the days when three yellows lock you into an ugly family (
-ATCH,_OUND).
People turn it off when they want information theory: a second guess that is not a possible answer, used only to split remaining candidates. That strategy is legal in easy mode and illegal in hard mode. Neither is cheating. They are different games.
Traps after guess two
The painful hard-mode losses are almost never “I did not know the word.” They are “the clues forced a corridor.”
Locked greens, wrong family. You have S_ATE and a pile of yellows. Easy mode lets you guess CRONY to burn consonants. Hard mode makes you keep typing SLATE-shaped words until the list dies. If you opened with a rare-letter novelty word, the corridor is narrower.
Too many yellows, nowhere to put them. Five confirmed letters and two slots still swapping is a classic fail. You will burn guesses on anagrams. Slow down. Write the permutations. Double letters. Hard mode does not tell you a letter appears twice. A green L and a gray second L elsewhere still allow LL in another pattern. Do not treat one gray as “never again” if the first L is already green in a different slot.
Yesterday’s muscle memory. Hard mode on the daily is still today’s letters. Practice boards on Unlimited do not carry greens into the Times grid.
Openers are a different job
A pretty first word can trap you because guess two must obey it. Vowel dumps (ADIEU) spend the opening turn on vowels and then force consonant chaos under hard rules. Mixed openers that WordleBot-era writeups keep citing — SLATE, CRANE, STARE, TRACE, and hard-mode conversations around TROPE — are citations, not our lab ranking. We do not crown one.
Pick a word you will actually type for a month. Test it under hard rules. Details and the “do not invent science” table are on best starting words. If this page and that page repeat the same ranking, one of them is filler. This page stops at: hard mode makes opener choice stickier, because you cannot throw the first word away.
Practice on Unlimited
Our Wordle Unlimited boards are the gym. They do not need to clone NYT’s toggle to be useful. Play with the rule in your head:
- Finish today’s official grid first if the streak matters — on NYT, with hard mode on or off as you prefer.
- Open Unlimited. Choose one opener. Reuse every green and yellow on purpose. If you catch yourself probing, restart the board, not the daily.
- Do ten boards. Write down how often guess two felt forced.
- Repeat with a second opener for a week. Keep the one you would still type on a Monday.
That is the experiment. You do not need a million-game simulation to decide whether SLATE traps your hands.
If Unlimited feels too easy, keep the hard-mode house rule and ban repeating the same opener. If it feels cruel, drop the house rule and use the solver after guess three on practice boards only. Difficulty is a dial. Practice never syncs the NYT streak, and that is the point.
